Blog 2: Week 11 Distance Education & Virtual Schooling

As the semester is coming to end in our Introduction to Educational Technology class, all of our previous task is now compiled into one assignment which is making Prezi. From digital story telling, to organizational tools, to social tools, an to web 2.0 technologies, will all be used to help create our last assignment. The purpose creating something like Prezi could be for educational purposes. This week we learned about different gaming aspect can be incorporated into the aspect of learning, which Prezi is some what of a good exmaple of this. I can truly understanding why using gaming aspect for learning since playing video games are fun and enjoyable, and people retain more information when they enjoy doing something.

I really do think Prezi is an amazing tool, but it seems like it fits bit in the field of education rather than in the area of business. Even though in Business there are different teaching seminars where prezi can be possibly used, I think it would work better for the younger minds rather than for grown adults. It is a cutting edge tool, does some very cool tricks, and seems to me that it will be better for a presentation in the class room.

I found an interesting video where it teaches you how to create a better presentation using prezi rather than your usual slide slow presentation. I do agree that prezi can be used to create a much better presentation the PowerPoint or others like in since it already has all the features they embody, but has its own uniqueness with the aspect of zooming in and out. I thinks it whats give it the edge and what makes it so amazing. Here is the video.

Blog 2: Week 10 Open source Software

The information presented in my Introduction of Educational Technology class has been very helpful and resource information thus far. During week 10 of class it didn't seemed like I could of been surprised again, but I was when i learned about open source software. Open source software are software that people write that is open so that other people can add their features or inputs, allowing the software to become as good as we need it to be. The even better thing about open source software is that its FREE. Most of us usually pay for different software like Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and a super expensive Software called Photopshop, well just imagine getting software similar these with the same or close enough capabilities for Free. This is magic of open source software, allowing people to work together while saving a few dollars.

Even though I might not be able to write programs for different open source software, I could still definitely be a user of many of these software. Even today I'm using fire fox, which is probably the most popular open source software, to browse the internet and find information. In my future career, I would have to research information (primarily using a browser), write documents, make slide shows for presentations, create spread sheets, create an image, and so on. All of these can and much more can be done using the many available open source software on the web for free. I learning about this will truly carry over to my next step in life.

Open source software is not only for handling business, but another cool part of it is that here are open source video games. There are plenty of video games out there that people can take advantage of and play for free. Today video game console cost at least $200 and individual games cost around $50 per game. Instead of spending all the money you can freely enjoy some awesome games from your computer and save some money. If you don't like a particular game and knows how to write programs, you are able to adjust the game to your likings. Here is a list of a bunch on open source games.

Blog 2: Week 9 Creating Professional Web Presence

The topics of discussion in week nine of EME 2040, was professional web pages. When I was in high school, making a web page was not as easy as it is today. Back then I thought it was sort of simple to do well now its even scarier how simple it is thanks to different tools things like Google Site. Using Google site to make a web page is as easy as making a facebook profile, so basically a 6 or 7 year can easily make one. With google site you had the option of creating various types of web pages ranging from class, sports music, and etc, but for class purposes we had to create one for professional matters. I thought this was an excellent idea since you are able to market yourself on a larger scale to companies. Even thought I knew about google site, i have not taken advantage of it yet but I will now.

Making a professional can be beneficial to no matter what field you are going. In today's job market everyone needs to differentiate themselves from other to able to stand out a get the job. I do think with making a professional web page it makes you stand but it also market you on a larger scale since a lot of companies are usually scanning the internet for employees and things about prospective employees. Other than just making professional web pages google sites can be definitely be used to sell products, advertise, and more, so you can take advantage of it in those areas as well.

I found a article that talks about making a creating a professional web presence on a budget. First give the options on doing it for free with something like google sites, then it goes into owning your own domain by paying $10-$40 a year for it. With owning your domain it give you a better feeling on Independence since your will be something like this "www.yoursitename.com", instead of something like this "www.google.com/sites/yoursitename". With me thought I will take free over anything any day so I will still use google sites.

Blog 2: Week 8 Tech Tools

During week eight of my Introduction Educational Technology class, we went over several interesting topics ranging from worldle, bubbl, gliffy and more which all fell under the category of Tech tool for critical thinking. With Wordle students were able to create a word picture of an article or writing, and the most important words of the article will be highlighted in the wordle. By just glimpsing at the wordle you will be able to figure out what the main topic or a particular writing was. With bubbl and gliffy, students were able to easily create stem graphs, timeliness or connect charts, where the can link different topics together. The interesting fact about these were that you are able to do them on the internet so they can be easily shared with friends or business works, to be easily updated and added on to.

This weeks information seems to have some relevance to what I will be doing in the future. With Wordle its give you a picture of words so you can definitely use this to your advantage and advertise the good about a company, which is form of public relations. If there is an article which talks good about the company, why not wordle and put in on the company website or billboard to even further the companies good name. With Bubbl I really do love the aspect of its sharing capabilities, since sometimes in business people work in different time zones and this is a very efficient way the get business done, instead of attaching email then editing it then resending it, bubbl and other tools like it makes things easier since all this will be done on internet and no attachment necessary.

This week I was really impressed with the Wordle tool. It is so simple and can be easily done, and yet could be so effective. As i mentioned before this can be a great tool for public relations of a company, and the can broad cast the good about their company with just a simple Wordle. Here is a video which give you an easy tutorial of how to operate wordle.

Blog 1: Week 5 Digital Storytelling

By time the 5th week came around came around in my Introduction to Educational Technology class, I thought all the information was very helpful and worth learning. The week I will have to say was the most fun week since we learned about digital technology and different tools and applications we can use for digital storytelling. For our week’s assignment we had to use a digital storytelling applicant and create a story of own. I used the GoAnimate and was very pleased with the capabilities I had with this application, and was able to use character, have them in motion or express different facial expression, and do different special effects. With that I created and story where I husband was watching a game and his wife interrupts his games with questions.

Digital Storytelling applications are really some fun and amazing application to use. In regards to my area of study, Business/Finance, I can use this to some advantages but I think it goes better in the educational field but also for personal use as well. Most people use these types of applications to share messages and funny or interesting stories with family or friends, or to pass on some educational information in a very unique and more amusing way. Even though I think I will be able to use such applications in not so serious situations to loosing up and enjoy time with my co-workers.

Digital storytelling seems to be a major discussion in the educational field. I found this website where teachers can inform themselves on how to use digital storytelling to enhance learning since we are in the digital time. Students are much more in tuned to different social networking tools such as YouTube, where they watch videos for several hours for different reasons. Why not use digital technology to tell stories in order for students to learn. Even though digital story seems to be a major tool for educational purpose, you can still use it for other reason. Here is the link to this website a mentioned. http://teachingteachers.com/

Blog 1: Week 4 Photoshop

In Week 4 of my Introduction to Educational Technology class, I really started enjoying the material that was being presented. Since I'm a Finance major, I and along with many other business had to make different application such as Microsoft Excel and Access, our best friend. I honestly thought these were some of the most amazing programs on the computer until I was introduced to Adobe Photoshop in my EME 2040 class. This week we went over a brief introduction of photo shop, we learn how to make simple things such as cloud, grass, using the eraser tool, and some other things on the tool bar. I always thought photoshop was hard to use but this week information made me realize how easy it was and just required some playing around just to get better at it. Now I think photoshop is just as amazing as the other application I previously learned.

People have been using photoshop in many situations, and I know for a fact it can be pertinent to my field of working. Usually I would ask someone to make me a poster, alter a picture or enhance an image and now it I will be able to do it myself. When I do presentations, I can use photo to enhance my image and market myself a lot better due to the capabilities of photoshop. I love the aspect of marketing and companies are not the only that can market themselves, individual can to as well and photoshop is a great tool to help them do that.

To endorse even more of how great photoshop is, I found a video that teaches everyday people how to navigate and work this application. The reason I chose this video was to show how easy it is to use photoshop and how easy it is to learn it due to social web tool like YouTube where you can find many tutorials and step by step videos showing you how to operate photoshop. Like I said before photoshop is really for anyone who wants to market themselves better, so take a look and enjoy this video.

Blog1: Week 3 Copyright

Week 3 in my Introduction to Educational Technology class had some really relevant information for adequate internet user, and for individual who use different social networking tools. This week some information that was present dealt with the issues of copyright. Copy is basically the rights that are given to owners of intellectual properties like music, book, movie, videos, photos and even ideas, to control their properties where other can’t use it without permission. I have previously learned about copyright but it think it’s sometimes important to go over this information to be reminded of it since it usually goes over our head sometimes. Thanks to Fair use though, we can use copyright material under certain situations, without permission from the owners. For example people are allowed to use 30 seconds of any audio without permission, and Universities and students are also place on the Fair use since they use other people's material for education purposes. An interesting fact to know though is that those laws of copyright sometimes do not apply to other people in other countries.

Copyright is very relevant to my nature of work. In the business/finance field people are steadily doing PowerPoint or video presentation which sometimes consist of audio, picture or someone else idea. As you can see it’s very important for people in my field to be aware of these things in order to not break the laws, and stay out of trouble. I will also like to open up my own business one day and plan on taking advantage of the copyright laws so someone else does use replicate my business name or logo.

To get a better understanding of copyright I found this interesting video which was created by Walt Disney Studios. It’s a very interesting video since it used many of its famous characters to explain the meaning of copy. Disney is also a company known for dealing with many copyright issues because of it character, movies, logos and etc so I could understand why they would create something like this to inform people. Take a look and enjoy the video.
